MOTH

by Luke Otley

My hands were shaking–
I kept a watchful eye
on my palms and fingers
for fear I might be witness to years
of slumbered energy
furiously roused.

I feared for a moment
the thought of my fingers
fluttering off
to join the thousand moths
crowded around the bulb,
above me in its metal crane,
and I couldn’t know for sure
the rest of me
would stay.
